Chandeliers
Made in reference to a chandelier that hangs in Nottoway plantation in Louisiana. Nottoway was a sugarcane plantation and is the largest standing plantation in the south. It is currently used a hotel/ restaurant/ resort and wedding venue for “Gone with the Wind” and “Southern Plantation” style weddings. This erasing of space and labor allows for the rewriting and myth making of the space to benefit and serve a certiant a class of people. I interested in interrupting the myth being built and re-inscribing these histories back into place.
The use of hair to show how integrated the black body is in the excessive opulence of the historic home. Often the critic of these homes are that “while yes they were built on slave labor, they are beautiful”. The extortion of the body is in every fiber of these plantation homes no matter how grand the architecture is.
